3ds Max's file output system is flawed in many ways.
That results in many problems when working with Render Elements, EXR files, MultiLayer files, and Cryptomatte. Bit-depths get saved wrong, files change their size between render nodes, render element paths don't update when the main output path changes, PNG output errors show up, etc., etc.
Corona relying on it basically cripples many of its functionalities, as it's one thing to generate data, but another to save it properly (especially in a network scenario).
It would be great to have a similar solution to what V-Ray already has. That way, we could save custom, proper EXR files, where color data has 16-bit, and utility passes like WorldPosition, ZDepth, and Velocity have 32-bit, which would be amazing for animations. Cryptomatte being saved in CXR makes it useless for animations right now, as the file sizes are enormous.
The ability to render still images and save separate TIFF files to one location and CXR to another - also via render farm - would also be great.
As of 2026-02-12 preview build Corona uses own handling of output - this was necessary to have per Camera resolution override. Note that this does not automatically mean fixing of all known limitations/bugs of 3ds Max file output. This is to say that Corona has "Native file output handling".
Specific output, render element, bit depth etc. related issues can be reported separately to be prioritized and planned.
